To get Winston to love Big Brother, the party had to work a lot. For instance, at first they scared him by accusing him of lots of crimes. They wanted to humiliate him and destroy his power of reasoning and arguing. This works because he had never been weakened to a point that he loses power of reason. They then have Winston understand the party. O'Brien tells him that he is the author Goldstein's book and that rebellion against the party is not possible since they have absolute power over all the citizens. This does not convince him, therefore he is taken to room 101. Here, he faces rats which are his greatest fear. When he sees them, he quickly betrays Julia and shouts that she is the one that should be punished. By this stage we see that Winston has been broken down, and rebuilt in the way the party wants him to be. Ultimately he learns that she has also betrayed him. He recognizes that the party can even control love, therefore there was no other choice than to accept to love Big Brother.

Book 3 Chapters 4-6
"He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother"(245)
Book 3 Chapters 1-3
"You will work for a while, you will be caught, you will confess, and then you will die... There is no possibility that any perceptible change will happen within our own lifetime. We are the dead."
In this quote we see O'Brien explain the brotherhood to Julia. Instead of being a protesting group, the brotherhood is bait by the party in order to catch those that plan on overthrowing the government. It is not clear however if the organization ran by Emmanuel Goldstein actually exists. They seem to already have a cycle of what happens to people when they join. Though it does not always work out this way. The party releases members of the brotherhood when they believe that they are no harm to them. In the story, Winston tries to join the brotherhood and that is how O'Brien catches him and Julia. After being caught, they are eventually tortured into loving the party. This also shows how the party has complete control of the citizens Oceania and they are ready for anything. It might seem crazy that someone might be against the party after so much effort to brainwash them but if it happens, they have a plan to deal with it. After figuring this out made me question if there really is hope for Winston and Julia to live the life they want to.

Book 2 Chapters 7-10
"They can't get inside of you. If you can feel that staying human is worth while, even when it can't have any result whatever, you've beaten them"(166).
Here we can see how Winston explains to Julia that he is able to persevere and ignore the influence of the party. He has accepted that there is no way to escape death, so he takes advantage of his ability to think freely. Winston seems to be unchallenged and unrestricted because he knows that his thoughts will remain internally in his mind no matter what the party does to him. I think that this is smart from Winston because since he knows that there is no way out, why not live life freely and do whatever one desires. I would also act the same way because the party wants to brainwash people, and if one has a sense of life and thinks on their own, it will be hard for the party to change the person's mind.

Book two chapters 3-6
"She had had her first love affair when she was sixteen, with a Party member of sixty who later committed suicide to avoid arrest. 'And a good job too,' said Julia. 'Otherwise they'd have had my name out of him when he confessed.' Since then there had been various others. Life as she saw it was quite simple. You wanted a good time; 'they' meaning the Party, wanted to stop you having it; you broke the rules as best you could. She seemed to think its just as natural that 'they' should want to rob you of your pleasures as that you should want to avoid being caught." -pg.109
I think reading these words lets the reader know a bit more about Julia and the party. Starting off with the fact that her first love affair was when she was sixteen and her partner was sixty is impressive. From this we can see that she only wants pleasure, and it does not matter with who. We can also see how people are so brainwashed and scared of the party that they rather kill themselves than live with the guilt. This make sense in some way because I would probably do the same since the party will not only kill him, but torture him before they did so. The most important thing that I see however is the fact that Julia is not scared to do it. This lack of fear might come in handy if she ever tries to rebel with Winston. Lastly, one can see the different mentality she has. She wants to enjoy life and enjoy the pleasure she receives from men. She states "you broke the rules as best as you cold"(109). She breaks the rules in a careful manner in order to not get caught.

Chapters 7-8 and 1-2
“To be killed was what you expected. But before death (nobody spoke of such things, yet everybody knew of them) there was a routine of confession that had to that had to be gone through: the groveling on the floor and screaming for mercy, the crack of broken bones, the smashed teeth and bloody clots of hair. Why did you have to endure it, since the end was always the same?” (102)
This quote caught my attention because it uses great descriptions to paint an image in the reader's head about what is going on. For instance Orwell uses phrases such as "the crack of broken bones" and "the smashed teeth and bloody clots of hair" to get the reader to picture these horrific scenes and feel sympathy for the people being tortured. This is also interesting because it is not quite clear to me why people were tortured. If the reason was to show others what could happen to them, why did others enjoy watching prisoners be tortured? Even the kids were upset when they missed someone getting beat up for no reason. Did they want to show that they were not scared of being tortured and would rather be killed quick and painless? Lastly, if the thought police knew everything that a person had on their mind, why was there a need for torture?

1984 Chapter 2-6
"Who controls the past," ran the party slogan, "controls the future: who controls the present controls the past"(32).
This slogan serves as an example to how the party treats the citizens. The party is able to falsify records and change the past, which strengthens the idea of Big Brother being looked up to. This lie cannot be proved wrong since the documents and evidence have been destroyed.
"More commonly, people who had incurred the displeasure of the party simply disappeared and were never heard of again"(44-45).

"More commonly, people who had incurred the displeasure of the party simply disappeared and were never heard of again"(44-45).
This line describes what happens to people who offend or disagree with the party. This is another strength that the party has in which it can get rid of people who do not follow what they say. By eliminating people who have different opinions, they are able to hold on to the power and control the citizens.
"'Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness" (53).
This is the main goal of the party, to stop people from thinking. This is also shown when they make people believe that two plus two is five. They do not want people to think about why things are the way they are, it is more convenient for the party if the citizens just listened and went along without questioning them.
