Book two chapters 3-6

"She had had her first love affair when she was sixteen, with a Party member of sixty who later committed suicide to avoid arrest. 'And a good job too,' said Julia. 'Otherwise they'd have had my name out of him when he confessed.' Since then there had been various others. Life as she saw it was quite simple. You wanted a good time; 'they' meaning the Party, wanted to stop you having it; you broke the rules as best you could. She seemed to think its just as natural that 'they' should want to rob you of your pleasures as that you should want to avoid being caught." -pg.109

I think reading these words lets the reader know a bit more about Julia and the party. Starting off with the fact that her first love affair was when she was sixteen and her partner was sixty is impressive. From this we can see that she only wants pleasure, and it does not matter with who. We can also see how people are so brainwashed and scared of the party that they rather kill themselves than live with the guilt. This make sense in some way because I would probably do the same since the party will not only kill him, but torture him before they did so. The most important thing that I see however is the fact that Julia is not scared to do it. This lack of fear might come in handy if she ever tries to rebel with Winston. Lastly, one can see the different mentality she has. She wants to enjoy life and enjoy the pleasure she receives from men. She states "you broke the rules as best as you cold"(109). She breaks the rules in a careful manner in order to not get caught.

  1. I think you picked a very nice quote and did a great job writing it in your own words. I most definitely agree with your point of the people being scared of the Party that they prefer killing themselves then suffering through the party's torture.
