Book 2 Chapters 7-10

"They can't get inside of you. If you can feel that staying human is worth while, even when it can't have any result whatever, you've beaten them"(166).

Here we can see how Winston explains to Julia that he is able to persevere and ignore the influence of the party. He has accepted that there is no way to escape death, so he takes advantage of his ability to think freely. Winston seems to be unchallenged and unrestricted because he knows that his thoughts will remain internally in his mind no matter what the party does to him. I think that this is smart from Winston because since he knows that there is no way out, why not live life freely and do whatever one desires. I would also act the same way because the party wants to brainwash people, and if one has a sense of life and thinks on their own, it will be hard for the party to change the person's mind.

  1. This quote is very meaningful and it proves that it doesn't matter how much power others have they will never be able to control your thoughts and memories. Winton feeling like that's his way of being free.
